An Indian-origin man, described by UK police as a “dangerous” individual, has been convicted of the murder of a former friend due to a feud over drugs worth around 5,000 pounds. Amraj Poonia, 27, from Horley in south-east England, was found guilty of murder at a trial at the Old Bailey court in London on Thursday. A portion of a building perched on a hillside collapsed in a matter of seconds and fell into the valley in Mizoram's capital today. Dramatic videos of the collapse show the structure standing one second and gone the next while a woman is heard screaming. The falling portion can also be seen taking down parts of the main building with it. The incident took place in the Zohnuai locality of Aizawl. The building was home to five families, all of whom were evacuated when the structure began to shake.  An additional 18 families living close to the building have also been evacuated, said officials. Local residents said the road beside which the building stood had developed a crack on June 12.  Officials said it has been raining on and off in Aizawl, which may have contributed to the building's collapse.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday told the legislative assembly that the iron ore mining operations in the state, which came to a standstill in 2018, will start by November this year. The mining industry used to be one of the major revenue earners for the coastal state. However, it stopped functioning in 2018 after the Supreme Court quashed 88 mining leases. Responding to the demands for grants of the mining department, Mr. Sawant told the House during the ongoing Monsoon session of the assembly that nine blocks of iron ore have already been auctioned. The state government has collected Rs 45 crore for the auctioning of the nine blocks, he said. In December last year, the Goa government said it completed the first phase of the auction of mining blocks with four companies winning bids for the extraction of ore from different mineral-rich stretches of the coastal state. Ninety-eight students died by suicide in the past five years in higher education institutions, including central universities, IITs, IIMs, NITs and IISERs, according to the Union Ministry of Education. Twenty cases of student suicides have already been reported in higher education institutions (HEIs) in 2023 so far. These include nine cases from central universities and seven from IITs. The data was shared by Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar in response to a written question in the Rajya Sabha. The minister informed that the majority of the suicide cases being reported in the last four years were from engineering institutions. According to the data, of the 98 students who died by suicide, the maximum cases were from IITs (39), followed by NITs (25), central universities (25), IIMs (4), IISERs (3) and IIITs (2). Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to hold meetings with groups of NDA MPs between July 31 and August 10 as the alliance gears up its preparations for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Manipur government has sought a detailed report from the Assam Rifles on how at least 718 Myanmar nationals - in just two days i.e. July 22 and 23 - "were allowed to enter India" without "proper travel documents", according to a statement by the Home Department late on Monday. The statement assumes significance as it asks the Assam Rifles how, under its watch, over 700 Myanmar nationals entered India in just two days amid the tensions prevailing in Manipur due to the over two-month-long ethnic violence between the valley-majority Meiteis and the hill-majority Kuki tribe. The Central forces deployed for the panchayat elections will continue to remain in West Bengal for another 10 days, the Calcutta High Court said on Monday. An official of the revenue department in Madhya Pradesh's Katni swallowed money he had taken as a bribe after spotting a team of the Lokayukta's Special Police Establishment (SPE), an official said. The incident took place on Monday when patwari Gajendra Singh received Rs 5,000 as a bribe in his private office as part of a trap laid by authorities, SPE Superintendent of Police Sanjay Sahu said. "A man from the Barkheda village had complained to us, accusing Gajendra Singh of seeking a bribe. After taking the money, Mr Singh spotted the SPE team and swallowed it. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors said he is fine," the official said. A case has been registered and further probe is underway, the police said.

Sixty-four multi-tier, reusable graves have been built at a Christian cemetery in Madhya Pradesh's Indore to tide over a shortage of burial land. Four bodies can be buried in as many layers one over the other, while the lowest tier will be kept empty for bodies to be placed after five or more years, Indore Catholic Diocese's Bishop Chako Thottumarickal told news agency PTI. "These 64 five-tier graves have been built at the Kanchan Bagh cemetery. The work was completed on July 1. After the bodies are put in the lowest compartment, we will have space for another four bodies. The idea was finalised through consensus after we sought advice from the community for solutions to tackle a shortage of burial land," he said. The graves are 4.5 feet wide and 6.5 feet long, with a 16-foot pit with multiple layers as well as space for headstone inscriptions, he said, adding that such an arrangement may be a first for the country. The Mumbai Police on Sunday received a call claiming an explosives-laden tanker was headed towards Goa, an official said, adding the call turned out to be a hoax. An unidentified person called up the Director General of the Police control room in Mumbai in the afternoon and said a tanker filled with explosives was on the Mumbai-Goa highway. Police intercepted the tanker, whose description was given by the caller, at Sangameshwar, 290 km from Mumbai, in Ratnagiri district, the official said. Police checked the tanker but didn't find any suspicious material and allowed it to proceed with the onward journey, he added. Manipur Police has arrested a sixth person in connection with the May 4 parading of two women naked in Kangpokpi district of the state, officials said on Saturday. Police said the arrested person is a juvenile. Police had made the first arrest on Thursday, a day after a 26-second video of the horrific incident surfaced on July 19. Three more arrests were made later that day. The fifth accused, 19-year-old youth, was arrested on Saturday. The Indian Railway has decided to offer affordable economy meals and packaged drinking water to passengers in general seating (GS) coaches of trains. "The Railway Board has issued instructions for the provision of economy meals, snacks/combo meals to be served through extended service counters to be placed at platforms near general seating (GS) coaches to facilitate the service of economy meals, snacks/combo meals and affordable packaged drinking water to passengers travelling in GS coaches of the trains," according to a Railway Board release. The meals will be supplied from the kitchen units (Refreshment Rooms, RRs, and Jan Ahaars - JAs) of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The location of these counters has been decided by Zonal Railways so as to align these counters with the location of General coaches on platforms. The provision of these extended service counters at the platforms has been done on an experimental basis for a period of six months.

The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court has held that a person suffering from HIV, who is otherwise fit, cannot be denied employment or promotion. A suspected agent of Pakistan's spy network Inter-Services Intelligence or ISI was arrested here on Sunday for allegedly supplying vital information about Indian military establishments to his handlers, an official statement said. "Raees, a resident of Gonda, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS). Seven families were evacuated from Kholaksa, located about 3 km from Losar in Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, following flooding due to melting of a glacier. However, no casualty was reported. The floods were reported late Friday night and agricultural land was damaged. The seven families were shifted to safer places, Lahaul and Spiti Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar told PTI on Saturday. The melting of snow and glaciers has led to an alarming rise in the water level of several rivers and nullahs in the region and efforts are on to divert the water towards barren land, said the locals. The home minister approved the advance release of the second installment of the central share of the SDRF, amounting to Rs 180.40 crore for 2023-24, as an interim relief to Himachal Pradesh, it said. Intense monsoon rains brought normal life to a standstill in several parts of eastern and central Rajasthan, flooding out roads, rail tracks, low-lying residential areas and hospitals and claiming seven lives since Sunday night. The Delhi government issued a flood warning on Sunday as Haryana released more than one lakh cusecs of water into the Yamuna river from the Hathnikund barrage. The irrigation and flood control department said this was the first warning, with 1,05,453 cusecs of water discharged at 4 pm. Normally, the flow rate at the barrage is 352 cusecs, but heavy rainfall in the catchment areas increases the discharge. The water from the barrage takes around two to three days to reach Delhi. Authorities have been instructed to stay vigilant and take necessary action in vulnerable areas.
