The police on Sunday arrested two journalists for abetment to suicide of a 50-year-old man whom they allegedly framed in a false rape case in Odisha's Kendrapara district, an officer said. A woman, who was in complicity with the two in levelling the rape charge against the victim, is at large. The 50 -year-old man from a village under Patkura police station hanged himself from a tree on Thursday after being accused of raping the woman, the officer said. The police found a suicide note in which he blamed the two journalists and a 31-year-old woman for his death. The woman, prompted by the accused duo, had lodged a rape case against the victim. Police swung into action after his wife filed a police complaint against the three, holding them responsible for her spouse's death. Members of the Kuki tribes gathered at Thangjing Hill in Manipur's Churachandpur and held a protest on Sunday to prevent Meiteis from undertaking their annual pilgrimage to the "sacred site", officials said. The protesters reached the hill in many vehicles to hold a sit-in, they said. On Saturday, Kuki organisations "warned" the Meitei community against climbing Thangjing Hill, saying any such attempt "will be opposed tooth and nail". The Meitei Heritage Society in a statement said the "Indian State must decide if the rule of law should prevail and whether the constitutional rights of its citizens should be safeguarded". Several policemen sustained injuries during a clash between the security personnel and the agitators who held a protest rally against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act in northern Tripura's Kailashahar under Unakoti district on Saturday afternoon. The protest, organized by the Kailashahar Joint Action Committee, began from Tilabazar and proceeded towards Kubjhar area as they did not get police permission and decided to organise it outside the municipal area.  However, upon reaching Kubjhar, the situation escalated allegedly after a shoe was thrown towards the rally, which then took an ugly turn and a clash with police personnel followed. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted the release trials of the long-range glide bomb "Gaurav" from the Sukhoi aircraft. "Gaurav" is a 1,000-kg class glide bomb designed and developed indigenously by the DRDO. The trials, conducted from April 8 to April 10, successfully demonstrated a range close to 100 km with pinpoint accuracy, the defence ministry said on Friday. The trials are paving the way for the induction of the weapon into the Indian Air Force (IAF), it said. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented the DRDO, the IAF and the industry partners concerned for the successful development trials of "Gaurav". An army soldier on leave to testify in a murder case was allegedly shot dead in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Thursday. The soldier has been identified as 27-year-old Vikrant Gurjar. A resident of Mudikhedi village here, he was posted in Jammu and Kashmir. Vikrant came home on Tuesday on a four-day leave to testify in the case, they said. The alleged murder happened between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. According to Vikrant's family, he went out for a walk after dinner, but when he did not return, they tried to contact him over the phone. However, his phone was found switched off. A former top official of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) termed the successful extradition of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India "extremely important" as his interrogation could help in filling the blanks left behind from earlier investigations. NIA's former inspector general Loknath Behera told NDTV the case against Rana which is being handled by the anti-terror agency is related to a larger conspiracy and is pending before a special NIA court in Delhi. The NIA filed a chargesheet against Rana in 2011. In a second case, the Mumbai Police filed a chargesheet against Rana in 2023 for plotting the 26/11 terror attacks, he said. The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is set to revise water tariffs to offset its ever growing expenditure, said Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar on Wednesday. An official order notifying the new rates will be issued on April 10, he added. Speaking to the media at the BWSSB headquarters on Wednesday, Manohar said Bengaluru has witnessed rapid growth in both population and geographic spread over the past decade. BWSSB, an autonomous body without government subsidies, relies heavily on water charges as its primary source of revenue, he said. "Over the past 10 years, electricity costs have risen by 107 per cent, while maintenance expenses have increased by 122.5 per cent," he added. According to him, despite a monthly expenditure of Rs 200 crore, the Board currently collects only Rs 120 crore, resulting in a monthly deficit of Rs 80 crore. Curfew has been imposed in parts of Manipur's Churachandpur district due to tension over hoisting community flags in a "disputed area" between two villages inhabited by different tribes, a notification said. Tension erupted between Zomi and Hmar tribes on Tuesday after community flags were raised in the "disputed area" between V Munhoih and Rengkai villages in Churachandpur sub-division. Churachandpur district magistrate Dharun Kumar imposed curfew in the two villages and in the entire Kangvai, Samulamlan, and Sangaikot sub-divisions in the district. The curfew will be eased in the remaining areas of Churachandpur from 6 am to 5 pm till April 17 to allow people access to essential items and services, the notification said.
