The sharing of 10 seats in Uttar Pradesh where by-polls are due, are turning into another tug-of-war between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party. The SP, which has already announced candidates for six seats, announced a seventh today, and said the Congress has agreed to contest only two seats.  "Our agreement is final with the Congress. Of the 10 seats, the Congress will contest on two Khair (Aligarh) and Ghaziabad, while on the rest eight, the SP will contest," SP Spokesperson Rajendra Chowdhury was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India.  The Congress disagreed. The party has been demanding five of the 10 seats going to polls in November, though it is on a considerably weak footing after its disasterous performance in Haryana. State Congress chief Ajay Rai said, "We are not aware of this. As of now, we stand by our demand of five seats".  The SP has already declared candidates for seven seats including Muzaffarnagar's  Meerapur from where it

Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning lashed several parts of Mumbai late Thursday evening. Due to the showers, waterlogging was reported from some low-lying areas in the metropolis. The sudden downpour took many by surprise as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had only issued a 'yellow' alert for light to moderate rainfall in the financial capital. The showers also hampered the ongoing Navratri festivities and spoiled 'garba' (a ritualistic and devotional dance associated with the nine-day festival) plans of many revellers.  (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)

Maratha activist Manoj Jarange on Friday warned that if reservation is not granted to his community under the OBC category before the model code of conduct kicks in for the assembly polls, then those in power will not be spared. He also urged the ruling as well as opposition parties not to play politics with the Maratha community and instead focus on granting its "rightful inclusion" in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. Mr Jarange was addressing a press conference in his native Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna. "The BJP, which is in power at the state as well as at the Centre, can resolve this issue within an hour. They can either raise the reservation ceiling or include Marathas as Kunbis in the OBC category. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis must ensure that Maratha reservation is granted before the elections, or we will not spare them," he said. Elections to the 288-member Maharashtra assembly are likely to be held next month. He alleged that

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched a fierce criticism of the Congress party on Wednesday, alleging that its leadership was involved in taking land from farmers. Speaking at a rally in Haryana's Pehowa, Mr Singh referred to Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, and said, "It is their 'damaad ji' (son-in-law) who took the land of farmers. It was not some relative of the BJP who did that." Mr Singh accused the Congress of making false promises and not delivering on them. "They make promises and mislead the public, and then those promises are never fulfilled. They should not make promises that they cannot keep," he said. Speaking on the alliance between Congress and the National Conference (NC) in Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Singh mentioned their promise to reinstate Article 370. Union minister Chirag Paswan has caused a flutter by stating he would choose to give up his ministerial berth instead of a compromise on his principles, in keeping with the precedent set by his late father Ram Vilas Paswan. Mr Paswan, who heads Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), made the remark at a function of the party's SC/ST cell here on Monday evening, even as he maintained that he "will be in the NDA till Narendra Modi is my Prime Minister". Responding to questions from journalists about his cryptic remark in his speech, "I will not hesitate to renounce my ministerial berth as my father did", the young leader claimed he was speaking about the Congress-led UPA. "My father was a minister in the UPA government too. And too many things took place back then which were detrimental to the interests of Dalits. Even pictures of Baba Saheb Ambedkar were not put up at public events. So we parted ways," he said. Mr Paswan is understood to have played an in

Amid escalating tensions in West Asia (Middle East), the Indian Embassy in Israel has cautioned all Indians to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols advised by local authorities. The advisory was issued within hours of Iran threatening an attack on Israel in the aftermath of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah being killed in an Israeli missile attack. Iran followed up on the threat by launching over a hundred rockets at Israel, Iran's state media confirmed. Israel's defence forces said that its nationals were already in bunkers, taking shelter from the attack. The nearly year-long conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza strip has intensified with Tel Aviv going after Hezbollah - an Iran-backed militant organisation which supports Hamas. Iran had vowed to avenge the killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, killed last week, and had warned Israel of an imminent ballistic missile attack against it. Married off at the age of just four months, a woman came out of a 20-year unwanted situation on Monday when a family court annulled her child marriage. Unlike the previous annulment of the marriages solemnised in childhood, this annulment was different as the court ordered her husband to remit the expenditure incurred by Anita in the litigation process. Daughter of a peasant father, Anita had been married off when she was four months old. When Anita attained the age of 15 years, her in-laws began pressurising the family to send her to the husband's house. She resisted all such attempts with support from her elder sister and brother and later she came into contact with Kriti Bharti, managing trustee of Saarthi Trust. "On Monday, the presiding officer of the family court, Varun Talwar, ordered the annulment and also directed the in-laws to reimburse her with the litigation expenditure," said Bharti. "Child marriage is not only a vice but also a crime. This spoils
