The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is set to revise water tariffs to offset its ever growing expenditure, said Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar on Wednesday. An official order notifying the new rates will be issued on April 10, he added. Speaking to the media at the BWSSB headquarters on Wednesday, Manohar said Bengaluru has witnessed rapid growth in both population and geographic spread over the past decade. BWSSB, an autonomous body without government subsidies, relies heavily on water charges as its primary source of revenue, he said. "Over the past 10 years, electricity costs have risen by 107 per cent, while maintenance expenses have increased by 122.5 per cent," he added. According to him, despite a monthly expenditure of Rs 200 crore, the Board currently collects only Rs 120 crore, resulting in a monthly deficit of Rs 80 crore. "To bridge this financial gap and improve service delivery, a rational and modest tariff revision has been proposed,...

In an interaction entitled the ‘Opportunities and challenges for India's quest to become a developed economy by 2047' at the High Commission of India in London, she asserted that the economy was well placed to capitalise on domestic efficiencies and competitiveness as it tackles global headwinds. “The world has seen depressed growth for over several years; earlier, it was low interest for long and now it's going to be low growth for long, and that's not happy news for anybody,” said Ms Sitharaman, who is in London on her first UK visit in her current Union Cabinet term. “India has maintained its fastest growing economy tag continuously now for five years and we still think that momentum may moderate a bit, but it will still be I...

Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia on Thursday in Parliament made it clear that satellite spectrum would be allocated administratively rather than through auction, aligning with global practices. "We cannot auction an asset which is not fully in our control. This applies not only to India but all countries on earth," Jyotiraditya Scindia said, explaining the technical differences between mobile and satellite communications. During the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, the minister elucidated that mobile technology operates on low-frequency waves that dissipate in the atmosphere, necessitating spectrum auctions to prevent signal interference. In contrast, satellite communications use higher frequencies transmitted directly like a laser through fixed antennas. "Today, there is no country that auctions satellite spectrum across the world. The USA's Orbit Act prohibits the auction of satellite spectrum. In Europe, France, Germany - all countries assign sat...

Observing even a criminal enjoyed certain protections, the Supreme Court has directed the director generals of police (DGP) of all the states and UTs to strictly adhere to all safeguards available to persons in custody. A bench comprising Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Prashant Kumar Mishra called the police a very vital part of the state machinery, having a direct bearing on the safety and security of the society at large and individuals in particular. "The need, therefore, for maintaining the confidence of individuals and society-at-large in the police is paramount," it added. The court referred to a checklist shown by the counsel for Haryana under Section 41(1)(b) (ii) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. "Perusal of the same prima facie does not inspire confidence. Rather, it appears that only as a formality, the same has been submitted. We express our strong reservations with regard to filling-up of the checklist in a mechanical manner," the bench...

See how they have opposed Hindi language,' said Mr Thackeray., whose party had long stood for Maratha pride and advocated the use of the language across the state. "What is going on in Maharashtra? We are the ones who do not react... Every state's language should be respected," he said, urging his party workers to ensure that Marathi is spoken in Mumbai. Recently, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had claimed that 25 Indian languages, including Marathi, had suffered because several states adopted Hindi. His son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, had even given a list of languages that are on the verge of dyin...
