An army soldier on leave to testify in a murder case was allegedly shot dead in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Thursday. The soldier has been identified as 27-year-old Vikrant Gurjar. A resident of Mudikhedi village here, he was posted in Jammu and Kashmir. Vikrant came home on Tuesday on a four-day leave to testify in the case, they said. The alleged murder happened between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. According to Vikrant's family, he went out for a walk after dinner, but when he did not return, they tried to contact him over the phone. However, his phone was found switched off. Early Thursday morning, some villagers contacted the family after finding his body near a road with gunshot wounds to his head and chest, Sagar Jain, Superintendent of Police (Rural), told PTI. A former top official of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) termed the successful extradition of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India "extremely important" as his interrogation could help in filling the blanks left behind from earlier investigations. NIA's former inspector general Loknath Behera told NDTV the case against Rana which is being handled by the anti-terror agency is related to a larger conspiracy and is pending before a special NIA court in Delhi. The NIA filed a chargesheet against Rana in 2011. In a second case, the Mumbai Police filed a chargesheet against Rana in 2023 for plotting the 26/11 terror attacks, he said. In a case filed by BSP chief Mayawati's niece, an FIR was registered against Hapur Municipal Council Chairperson and six of her family members on charges of domestic violence, dowry harassment and sexual harassment on Thursday following a court directive, police said on Thursday. The woman married Vishal, son of Hapur Municipal Council Chairperson Pushpa Devi on November 9, 2023, said Rajeev Sharma, an advocate representing the complainant. "Since the marriage, the accused family allegedly used their political clout to demand a party ticket, Rs 50 lakh in cash and a flat as dowry," Rajeev Sharma said. A man rammed his car into a pole on Gurugram-Faridabad road in an inebriated condition on Thursday morning, killing a woman who was travelling with him, police said. The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is set to revise water tariffs to offset its ever growing expenditure, said Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar on Wednesday. An official order notifying the new rates will be issued on April 10, he added. Speaking to the media at the BWSSB headquarters on Wednesday, Manohar said Bengaluru has witnessed rapid growth in both population and geographic spread over the past decade. BWSSB, an autonomous body without government subsidies, relies heavily on water charges as its primary source of revenue, he said. "Over the past 10 years, electricity costs have risen by 107 per cent, while maintenance expenses have increased by 122.5 per cent," he added. According to him, despite a monthly expenditure of Rs 200 crore, the Board currently collects only Rs 120 crore, resulting in a monthly deficit of Rs 80 crore. Curfew has been imposed in parts of Manipur's Churachandpur district due to tension over hoisting community flags in a "disputed area" between two villages inhabited by different tribes, a notification said. Tension erupted between Zomi and Hmar tribes on Tuesday after community flags were raised in the "disputed area" between V Munhoih and Rengkai villages in Churachandpur sub-division. Churachandpur district magistrate Dharun Kumar imposed curfew in the two villages and in the entire Kangvai, Samulamlan, and Sangaikot sub-divisions in the district. The curfew will be eased in the remaining areas of Churachandpur from 6 am to 5 pm till April 17 to allow people access to essential items and services, the notification said. Subsequent relaxation will be reviewed and notified based on an assessment of the law and order situation, the notification said.
