The UK's Opposition Labour Party, hoping to win a mandate to form a government after the July 4 general election, has committed itself to stamping out anti-India sentiments within its ranks and building a strong strategic partnership with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led administration. The party's resolution during an annual conference under former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in favour of international intervention in Kashmir was widely seen as having cost it British Indian votes in the 2019 general election. There have also been concerns over some Labour councillors espousing pro-Khalistan views. At a ‘Political Hustings' event for Britain's South Asian community organised by ‘Asian Voice' in partnership with City Sikhs and City Hindus Network in London on Friday evening, Labour Party chair and shadow secretary of state for women and equalities Anneliese Dodds claimed that the party led by Keir Starmer is confident of having cleansed its ranks of any member...

A woman died after falling into a gorge while taking a selfie from a hill in Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand on Thursday, police said. The woman's husband was also with her when the incident happened. Sonal Payal (37), a resident of Roorkee in Haridwar district, worked as chief pharmacist at a hospital nearby. Her husband went down the hill to search for her but lost his way in the dense bushes. It took the State Disaster Response Force personnel several hours to reach the bottom of the gorge with the help of ropes. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday took a swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray for his statement that the monsoon session beginning June 27 will be the farewell session of the MahaYuti government. "Shouldn't he (Uddhav Thackeray) be in the House to give a farewell? Or will he say goodbye from a Facebook Live? The people will decide whether to bid a farewell," Shinde said, asserting that those sitting in the government are connected to the people and have done a slew of works for their betterment. The obvious reference was Uddhav Thackeray's regular use of Facebook Live during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government's tenure, instead of coming to the Mantralaya. Shinde, who chaired the state Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, also criticised the opposition for its move to boycott the customary tea meeting convened by him on the eve of the monsoon session. "This is the last session of the present state Assembly. So we thought that the oppo...

Maharashtra Government on Tuesday suspended IPS officer Quaiser Khalid for allowing a giant hoarding - whose collapse last month claimed 17 lives – without the approval of the DGP office. The 140x120 ft hoarding in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area collapsed on May 13 during gusty winds and unseasonal rains. A notification issued by the state Home Department on Friday said the IPS officer, as the then Government Railway Police (GRP) commissioner, permitted the erection of the hoarding without obtaining mandatory permission from the office of Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP). Mr Khalid committed administrative lapses and irregularities in sanctioning the hoarding on his own, the notification said. The hoarding size also deviated from the approved norms, it added. The suspension comes amid reports of Mumbai police probing a series of money transactions allegedly linking the company that owned the hoarding, and a business associate of the wife of the IPS officer. “A preliminary...
