States seem to have taken the surge in coronavirus infections seriously with tests for Covid-19 going up by more than 38% over the last two weeks compared to the first half of March. Countrywide, the total samples tested have gone up from 97.89 lakh between March 1-14 to 1.35 crore during March 14-27.

Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has directed the administration to draw up a roadmap for a second lockdown, a move that drew opposition from his own alliance partner, NCP, not to mention angry voices in BJP who warned of public protests. A decision may be likely on April 2 after a review. The instructions coincided with the state reporting an all-time high of over 40,000 cases.

Maharashtra is fit for imposing a fresh lockdown in its containment zones with the Covid-19 positivity rate, total confirmed cases per 100 tests, doubling almost every fortnight since January 26. It has gone up to 21.4% (March 14-27), well past its peak of July last year. Punjab, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Puducherry have entered the red zone, too, with their infection rates ranging between 5% and 7%, the highest being 7% in Punjab.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh on Saturday is being viewed as an extension of the BJP’s campaign for the West Bengal assembly elections on a day when the state faced the first of polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged voters to turn out in record numbers and exercise their right to vote as polling for the first phase of assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam began on Saturday morning. "Today, Phase 1 of the West Bengal Assembly elections begin. I would request all those who are voters in the seats polling today to exercise their franchise in record numbers," Prime Minister Modi said in a tweet.

The government said the expansion of the vaccination drive to cover all above 45 years is intended to prioritise the group that is most vulnerable to the disease, accounting for 88% of the over 1.6 lakh Covid-19 deaths in India. The case fatality rate (CFR) in this group is 2.85%, against a national average of 1.37%, said the Centre even as it called upon states to intensify efforts to increase vaccinations and urged private hospitals to increase participation.

A total of 771 Covid variants, including a “double mutant”, have been found across 18 Indian states but there is no evidence to link the current surge in some states to these strains, officials said on Wednesday. States witnessing higher cases have revealed a different mutation profile but detected variants have been prevalent in the community for last six to eight months, National Centre for Disease Control director Sujeet Kumar Singh said.

There is no risk of thrombosis or blood clotting due to use of Covishield, Niti Aayog member-health Dr V K Paul said on Wednesday and urged people to get vaccinated without any fear. This comes in the wake of concerns about possible adverse events in people vaccinated with Covishield, a vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca.

The health workforce actually available in India could be just over half of what is estimated by the government. Though migration of healthcare workers abroad is often cited as one of the foremost reasons for shortage of personnel, about a quarter of medically qualified persons available in India are out of the labour force, according to a just published study.
