Bodies of a 30-year-old woman and her three children were found on railway tracks in Jharkhand's Palamu district on Wednesday, a police officer said. The dead woman was identified as Manita Devi (30), a resident of Kharagpur village under Harihargunj police station of the district. A Bihar court on Saturday acquitted Union minister Giriraj Singh and 22 other people in connection with a nine-year-old case that was lodged after they staged a rail blockade. A 42-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Nagaon district of Assam, a senior official said on Wednesday. His minor son sustained critical injuries in the attack, he said. According to the senior district administration official, the incident took place at Rekapahar Reserve Forest area in Kaliabar sub-division of the district on Tuesday when the father-son duo was returning home on a bicycle. "They were suddenly attacked by the wild elephant, which came out of a nearby jungle," the official said. After getting information, forest and police officials reached the spot, and rushed them to Nagaon Civil Hospital, where doctors declared the 42-year-old man dead, he said. A woman was allegedly raped by her father's friend and the crime was orchestrated by her father and stepmother in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Monday. The accused father and his friend Rashid have been arrested while the stepmother is missing, they said. The woman, in her complaint, alleged that her father called his friend to their home on March 13 and her stepmother locked her and Rashid inside a room and he raped her, SP (Rural) Sagar Jain told PTI. The victim, who is married, said her father and stepmother threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident, he said. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray accusing him of attempting to destroy the careers of leaders of his own party. A policeman died at a hospital within hours of his arrest by the CBI on graft charges in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, officials said. Head Constable Mushtaq Ahmad, a resident of Billawar, was caught red-handed while allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a complainant at the women police station in Kathua, where he was posted, the officials said. They said the policeman was being questioned in a separate room inside the police station by the CBI sleuths when he complained of uneasiness and was rushed to Government Medical College (GMC) hospital for treatment. However, he died at the hospital, the officials said, adding the cause of the death was not known immediately. The government has paid claims in barely 5,036 hit-and-run cases — 3,209 for deaths and 1,827 for persons left grievously injured — since 2017-18, according to official data. This is only 6% of the number of persons killed and left injured every year in hit and run cases on Indian roads. On an average, 80,000 people either lose their lives or are left seriously injured in hit and run cases annually.

Two persons drowned and five went missing in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district while crossing the Chambal river on their way to a temple in Rajasthan on Saturday morning, officials said. The first Bharat Gaurav train for Telangana-Andhra Pradesh will depart from Secunderabad on Saturday, taking passengers on a tour of important religious, historical and cultural sites in northern and eastern parts of the country, the railway ministry said. The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will start the 'Punya Kshetra Yatra: Puri-Kasi-Ayodhya" from the Secunderabad railway station, it said. "This is the first 'Originating Bharat Gaurav Train' from the two Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This tourist circuit train will take rail passengers to some of India's most ancient and significant places in eastern and northern parts of the country," the ministry said in a statement. Noida Police on Friday said a 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly carrying counterfeit currency notes of Rs 38,220 face value that he had printed at his residence in Delhi after taking lessons from YouTube. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) Rajeev Dixit said the accused was held by officials of Badalpur police station from the GT Road near Chhapraula village following a tip-off. "The police team succeeded in arresting a man who printed fake currency notes using a printer. The accused has been identified as Abdul Raqib, who currently lives in the Ghazipur area of Delhi, and is a native of Muzaffarpur in Bihar," Dixit said. Two days after the death of a tusker, Odisha forest officials have found another carcass of an elephant in Ganjam district on Wednesday. The female elephant was found dead at Tiliki forest on the Ganjam-Kandhamal district border in Ghumusar North Division, an official said. The age of the animal is around 30 years, and the cause of its death could be ascertained only after post-mortem examination, said Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Sudarshan Behera. On Monday, forest personnel had found the carcass of a 30-year-old tusker near Gambhari Gochha village in Muzagarh forest range. At least eight elephants have died in the district in the last eight months, including seven in Ghumusar North Division due to different reasons, forest department sources said. As per the data given by the government citing the NCRB report, the total number of prisoners lodged in jails across India as on December 31, 2021 was 5,54,034 against the jail capacity of 4,25,069.
